Program areas at WaterAfrica
The 2021-2022 financial year was Waterafrica's thirteenth year of existence. During the 2021-2022 financial year, Waterafrica granted $250,000 to world vision, which used the funds to provide a lifetime of water, sanitation and hygiene to over 5,000 people living in undeveloped areas of zambia. In addition, world vision received a grant representing 50% of the funds Waterafrica provided resulting in an additional $125,000 in resources, which provided clean water, sanitation and hygiene to over 2,500 people in zambia. In spite of the unique challenges presented by covid-19, Waterafrica raised the awareness zambias need for water, sanitation and hygiene by doing the following:1. Conducting a year-end information and fundraising campaign that resulted in contributions of $116,000.2. Conducting a lake oswego, Oregon walk for water event simulating the daily routine of women all over the world walking to get water. The event resulted in contributions of nearly $95,000. 3. Conducting two wine to water fund raising events introducing donors to the need for clean water in zambia. The events resulted in contributions exceeding $86,000. Waterafrica has been blessed to partner with world vision, which has been actively providing clean water in zambia for many years. In 1990, only 22% of the population in rural zambia had safe drinking water. By 2021, due to the efforts of Waterafrica, world vision and others, 60% of rural zambians had safe drinking water. Since 2006, Waterafrica has provided 68,000 zambians with clean water, sanitation and hygiene. In partnership with world vision zambia, Waterafrica's goal is to finish the job of providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene to remote villages in zambia by the year 2030. In order to achieve this, Waterafrica has set an ambitious goal of providing clean water for 28,000 over the next two years. A donation of $50 provides clean water, sanitation and hygiene training for one person for their lifetime. A $200 donation trains a community hygiene promoter who then serves ten households and a $400 donation provides trainers for a ten-person water, sanitation and hygiene committee. A $2,000 donation rehabilitates a water pump and $5,000 builds an improved ventilated pit latrine at a school serving 500 students. $15,000 provides a borehole, including all sanitation and hygiene training for 250 to 350 people.
