Free Flowing Rivers: 2023 saw major advances in protecting and restor- ing free flowing rivers in Oregon. WaterWatch completed demolition of Lovelace Dam in the Applegate River subbasin and Takelma Creek Dam in the Illinois River subbasin after raising the necessary private, state and federal funds to pay for the skilled engineering and construction workers required to complete these projects. Combined, these projects opened or improved access to 29 miles of habitat for salmon and steel- head. Another Rogue Basin project is on the verge of providing unimpeded access to one hundred miles of high quality upstream habitat for salmonids.
Willamette: WaterWatch is involved in a US Army Corps of Engineers process to reallocate 1.6 million acre-feet of water stored behind Willamette Basin. Our work also supported Oregon's application for nearly two hundred new instream water rights in the Willamette Basin to provide climate resilience for salmonids and cold water habitat across the basin.
Steamflow: In 2023, after a decade of WaterWatch's advocacy to restore and protect flows in the Crooked River in the Deschutes Basin, water released from Prineville Reservoir for downstream fish and wildlife will finally be protected instream. The state water right was the final step needed to protect water released for fish under the Crooked River Collabrative Water Security and Jobs Act, which WaterWatch helped negotiate, draft, and secure. Now, nearly 80,000 acre feet of water will be protected for fish and to restore streamflows in the Crooked.
