Program areas at Way-Whitehouse Memorial Amvets Post 35
Veteran's support: this program includes several sub-categories. Support for our active duty military included monetary donations to our local uso, the fisher house and the wounded warrior program. Other support was provided by donating cell phones for deployed veterans, puchasing uniform items, house sitting for deployed airmen and assisting family members during deployments. A second sub-category is support for homeless as well as sick and hospitalized veterans. Support for homeless veterans included providing free legal, medical and dental services, food, clothing and personal hygiene items at the annual veterans stand down event. Monetary donations were also given through the commander's discretionary fund for lodging and food for several veterans. Members of the organization also volunteered at the local va clinic to help the sick and hospitalized veterans. Many of the volunteered hours included visiting patients in hospitals or nursing homes, providing meals and also performing lawn services. Monetary donations were also made to the local va nursing home and covenant hospice. Other veterans support included participation in local military ceremonies including Memorial day and veteran's day activities.
Subordinate organizations and miscellaneous activities: the ladies auxiliary, sons and riders play an integral role in our organization. The auxiliary collects donations, assembles and mails "care packages" to the troops. They also collect outdated coupons and mail them overseas where military commissaries honor them. During the holiday season, the ladies auxiliary "adopts" several families in need and collect and distribute food, clothing and gifts to them. They also organize and oversee the angel tree, which provides christmas gifts to community children who otherwise would not have any. The auxiliary organizes and hosts the children's parties at christmas, easter and halloween, as well as raises funds for scholarships for local high school students. The sons have conducted benefit steak nights, purchased televisions and provided volunteer support for Post events and contribute to charity golf tournament. The riders have organized and participated in many charity poker runs to benefit veterans, cancer victims, toys for children, toys for tots, the uso and other local charities.
Community involvement: during thanksgiving and christmas, Post 35 cooks, prepares, and delivers meals to families in need that are in the local community. An annual charity golf tournament is also hosted by the organization, with all proceeds going toward scholarships for local students. Other not for profit organizations receiving donations include the special olympics, the muscular dystrophy association, st. jude's children's hospital, children in crisis, paws with a cause, the air force enlisted village and the american cancer society.
