Program areas at West Des Moines Historical Society
Educate students on the history of the underground railroad and one room school houses and provide a leadership program to students from participating area high schools. Hands on history summer camps provide 9-13 year olds the opportunity to learn about Historical Iowa, including paleo and prehistoric Iowa, arts, crafts and skills of early settlers, including fire making, churning butter, making paper, weaving and fabric dying. Included in all camps is a tour of the jordan house museum and in-depth discussion of the history of the underground railroad.
Preserve the history of West Des Moines and provide tours of the jordan house and bennett school to the general public.
