Waste diversion: the Westchester County Habitat for Humanity restore in yonkers, new york is the store that helps build homes and reduce waste! The restore accepts gently-used or new donated overstock and second-hand items, such as furniture, appliances, home decor and building materials to sell at reduced prices. By the end of fiscal year june 2023, the restore had diverted 42 tons of waste from the landfill. Proceeds support our work to build and preserve homes for hard-working, low-income families.
Aging in place: lower income senior homeowners in Westchester County face housing insecurity every day but have very few places to look for help. That's why Westchester County Habitat for Humanity's new aging in place home repair program fills a critical need in the housing spectrum. Through a multi-faceted and holistic approach, aging in place provides home assessments, repair assistance and modifications, and advocates for policies that support creating and preserving livable communities for people of all ages.
General program: Westchester is one of the wealthiest counties in the united states. But this wealth is not equally shared from city to city, village to village, or household to household. With the need for affordable housing in Westchester County totaling 82,451 units (Westchester County housing needs assessment, 2019) Westchester County Habitat for Humanity conducted a comprehensive listening tour, engaging community stakeholders across the County in order to understand needs, gaps and how best to integrate into the affordable housing landscape. Westchester County Habitat for Humanity seeks to serve Westchester communities by continuing to form partnerships with mission-driven developers, engage volunteers, and deliver innovative programming and solutions that meet the region's diverse and urgent housing needs.
Volunteer engagement: many of our programs depend upon the support of volunteers who donate their time and service. We work with volunteers in community spaces across new york. We also offer pathways to deepen engagement with our mission through leadership driven opportunities, retail store and special events. The operational costs of our volunteer program are financed through private institutions and individual donors.
