Program areas at Western Flyer Foundation
Restoration of the Western Flyer: the Western Flyer spent the year at snow and company in ballard, Washington, where we made significant progress on the installation of the mechanical components of the vessel, including the hybrid electric-diesel propulsion system, main driveline, generator, and steering systems. The Flyer got a new mast, smokestack, wheel, and galley cabinetry. In april 2023, the Western Flyer won a classic boat award for best restored power vessel.
Education and outreach: our community journal project connected scientific illustration and marine science mentors with elementary, middle, and high school classes to provide lessons on marine ecology, field sketching, and nature journaling. In 2022-23, the project served 385 students throughout monterey county, collaborating with 13 partner organizations and schools. In partnership with stanford and the naval postgraduate school, we also made significant progress in developing our onboard oceanography program for high school and college students. We purchased science instruments with funding support from stanford and the office of naval research, and after an extensive search, we hired a new science manager to launch our research program.by participating in community-focused events and festivals, we raised awareness about the historic Western Flyer and the legacy of steinbeck and ricketts while providing opportunities for the public to interact with the iconic vessel. For the fourth year, we cosponsored cannery row days in partnership with the monterey public library and the cannery row company. We also participated in community festivals, delivered presentations, and offered regular tours of the Western Flyer.
