The Whitefish Area Property Owners Association has a mission to protect the quality of Whitefish Lake through regular publicity and education via biweekly ads and articles in area newspapers, as well as distributing three print and electronic magazines to over 1100 members and other lakeshore owners and shoreland rest. The association also actively works on aquatic invasive species prevention and detection by conducting 70 access surveys on 14 lakes and channels, two AIS surveys at each of 34 lake accesses, and coordinating with Crow Wing County.
