Language revitalization - Wikitongues supports language revitalization by investing in language activists and accelerating language revitalization projects. Our language revitalization fellowship provides funding, training, and in-kind volunteer support to the leaders of new and early-stage language revitalization projects, and our language revitalization toolkit (also: the language sustainability toolkit) is a free resource that guides users through the process of launching a community-based and community-led language project.
Language activism - Wikitongues promotes language diversity through content, public speaking, and events. In 2023, Wikitongues staff spoke at an international mother language day event in corsica, france and at tedxgateway in mumbai, india. Our youtube channel, which teaches viewers about linguistic diversity, received 4.1 million views from 130,000+ subscribers across 50 countries.
Language linguistics - Wikitongues contributes to linguistics by maintaining free templates for linguistic documentation and maintaining a crowdsourced archive of language materials, primarily video oral histories. To date, we have safeguarded over a thousand oral history videos in over 715 languages. In 2023, 101 videos representing 31 unique languages were added. In parallel, we collaborated with the jewish language project at hebrew union college to record oral histories of critical endangered jewish diaspora languages, our first targeted documentation project so far.
Other programs - language archiving and general programs.
