During 2023 Wilderness East (WE) furthered its mission of advancing wildlands protection in Ohio by working in collaboration with Highlands Nature Sanctuary (HNS) to acquire new natural areas and hold them until funds could be raised by HNS to buy and permanently protect them. WE acquired, via secured promissory notes with HNS, 1) a 43.477-acre parcel of land in Scioto County adjacent to a pre-existing nature preserve known as the Gladys Riley Golden Star Lily Preserve, 2) a 15.84-acre parcel of land in Ross County adjacent to the pre-existing Tobacco Barn Hollow nature preserve, 3) a 77-acre parcel in Highland County adjacent to the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, the oldest and largest nature preserve in the HNS preserve system, 4) a 5-acre parcel in Scioto County adjacent to a pre-existing nature preserve known as Ohio Hanging Rock, and 5) a 99-acre parcel of land in Jackson County known as Sylvan Deep.
