Program areas at Windy City Rollers
Training - wcr recruits athletes and trains them in the skills required for roller derby. Wcr sponsors a beginner team that seeks to introduce newly recruited skaters to the sport. This consists of a four month training program. Wcr provides coaching, equipment, and facilities to develop athletes into competitve skaters. Wcr holds organized practices 5-7 times per week for a period of 2-6 hours each time for the competitive skaters. In addition, wcr and its teams sponsor cross-training programs (yoga, swimming, and outdoor boot camps) to prepare for the rigorous season.in response to the pandemic and related stay-at-home orders and other guidance, practices were effectively cancelled beginning in mid-march 2020 through the remainder of the year. Limited group skating activities were conducted outdoors during the summer months, but were not roller derby practices.
Bouts - wcr selects the best athletes from the greater chicago area to represent it in wftda's international and regional competitions. In order to develop athletes to successfully compete at wftda meets, wcr charters and supervises four local chicago teams and organizes intraleague competitions among those teams. Because the sport of roller derby requires constant training and skills development, wcr uses these more frequent local competitions in part to develop the skills of its athletes in competitive match play. In addition, wcr also sponsors a travel team which competes in bouts with teams from other cities.no wftda-sanctioned gameplay occurred in 2020 after mid-march, including international and regional competitions, which were cancelled. Windy City Rollers is following the wftda recommendations for return to play. There are currently no plans for 2021 gameplay, though it is anticipated that return to play protocol will be activated later in 2021, when the defined criteria are expected to be met.
