Program areas at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
Despite the continuing though diminishing challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic Wolf Hollow took 438 animals into rehabilitation during the year, representing 93 species. Animals from 24 locations including multiple island locations in the pacific northwest. 168 animals were released; an uncorrected rate of 33%. The corrected release rate (excluding DOA and EOA) is 61.5%. Both rates represent reductions from 2020 but close to or above standards. In 2021 WHWRC treated and released 4 harbor seals. Challenging factors besides Covid-19 included transportation delays due to WSF system challenges (delays getting animals into treatment), apparent feline panleukopenia in racoons (only 3 of 17 kits survived and well-intentioned individuals keeping injured animals too long before contacting professional wildlife rehabilitators. While we did not see a resurgence of Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease (AHD) in the deer population, we received very few fawns this year. We received a relatively small count of 5 harbor seals this year; all from San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
Educational activities returned to a more normal tempo during 2022. While some activities remained virtual, face to face activities returned and the number of participants, while still below the pre-pandemic 2019 level of 118 activities reaching 5428 participants, reflects improvement over 2020 (17/589 participants) and 2021 (92/2550 participants). There were also some new locations added during 2022. However we only attended 4 large events (vs 10 in 2019), where many people are interacted with in a relatively short period of time. The internship program returned to pre-covid level of activity and we were able to solicit interns from throughout the US. As in past years the individuals selected are pursuing or considering careers in animal rehabilitation and related disciplines. However, we were again unable to fill the Education Internship position.
