Program areas at World of Difference
After more than one year of persistent effort and with the help of a generous donor, World of Difference closed on 103.3 acres of land in Msundwe district. This required many hours of meetings, reviewing and revising legal documents, seeking counsel on local process for title deed transfers, stamps, etc., and working with leadership in the surrounding communities to introduce our organizations mission and to build relationships. As in 2021, World of Difference again employed local community members in short-term / temporary assignments throughout the year to accomplish our goals. These workers focused on Improving the soil by digging swales for effective water management, and also further expanding our crops of soya and ground nuts. Once harvested, these crops were again donated for feeding programs at several schools and orphanages (approximately 67 bags at 50 kilos each). In the new planting season, maize was also added to the staple crops. Additionally, land was prepared by the workers, and ~ 1200 macadamia trees and ~400 bamboo trees were planted. These will serve in the future as a resource for sustainability in our local operations.Additional donations through our volunteer team included 300+ menstrual kits, 300 lbs. of books and school materials, and 250 lbs. of medical supplies for local community clinics. Our expedition team of volunteer leaders hosted a community celebration to build relationships with the 14 villages that surround our property. Many hundreds of people were in attendance. This celebration was followed up by hosting workshops that benefited over 220 community participants. The workshops were educational in nature and were also intended to create connection. These included topics on women empowerment, health, agriculture, and male mentorship. In addition, 500+ children and teens participated in rotations that reinforced the power of play and connection. These activities helped to establish a better understanding of who we are as an organization and to build confidence that we desire to build capacity in their communities.World of Difference met with several local organizations who have similar goals and objectives to our three pillars, and identified some areas where we can work together to have greater impact. Some initial service was provided, and further plans are being developed to work more closely together in 2023. These organizations included:- Thrive- Zayane- Malawi College of Health Sciences- Kamuzu Central Hospital- Child Legacy InternationalFuture plans for our land are still being developed but will include it being an educational space for communities to learn the skills and knowledge needed to heal the soil, and grow healthy crops that will provide for their immediate needs, and give them a means to support their families long-term.
