Program areas at Yakima Humane Society
Animal Care and Adoption Services: The Yakima Humane Society is the only animal shelter serving Yakima County (the second largest county in Washington State) since its inception in 1904. YHS welcomes all animals and keeps them available for adoption while providing medical care as needed. Upon arrival, every animal receives an initial health evaluation and basic preventative care: vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, and parasite preventative measures. The health and welfare of the animals in our care is our first priority. Shelter pets diagnosed with an illness or injury are treated by local veterinarians. Spay or neuter surgery and a microchip implant are performed on every cat or dog prior to adoption. YHS neither euthanizes for lack of space, nor places time restraints on the animals in theircare.
Community Education and Outreach Services: YHS provides education and outreach via print and electronic communications, as well as public speaking presentations at community events, schools, chamber meetings, civic and social service organization meetings, fundraising events, local media, and networking opportunities throughout Yakima Countys business and nonprofit community.
Spay and Neuter Services: YHS provides low-cost spay and neuter services for qualifying individuals throughout Yakima and Kittitas County. We also ensure all animals that come into the shelter are spayed or neutered before being adopted. In addition, we perform weekly spay/neuter clinics for feral cat colonies in Yakima. YHS provided over 7,000 total surgeries in 2023 at our Spay and Neuter Clinic.
