Program areas at YMCA
Healthy living: the Ymca of Memphis & the Mid-South engaged in our cause of strengthening community through healthy living this year by assisting over 43,000 members in their health and wellness journey within our Ymca facilities. We provided instruction in the life-saving skill of swim lessons to over 7,500 youth and families.
Youth sports & summer day camp: youth involved with these Ymca programs are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors and better health. Our youth sports and specialty camp programs led 1,800 youth to explore and improve sports skills, problem solving abilities, and increase creativity.
Youth development: we believe that all children deserve the opportunity to discover who they really are and what they can achieve. Our association continues to provide before and after care at the majority of shelby county schools. For the 2022-2023 school year, we had over 9,600 children who registered for before and after school care. There were a total of 116 schools in 13 districts for this past school year. We continue to partner with Tennessee department of human resources and usda and have provided over 7,000,000 meals since march 2020. In 2022, we served at 74 schools and Ymca sites in Memphis (shelby county), jackson (madison county), milan and trenton (gibsoon county), and mckenzie (weakly county) and 40 open community centers, city of Memphis libraries, neighborhood christian centers, Memphis athletic ministries, churches and apartment complexes in areas that are under-resourced and underserved.our y-cap program engaged 260 households with at-risk students in activities that promote positive self-worth, goal-setting, improved behaviors, satisfactory academic performance, community service and summer reading. Y achievers is designed for the development of youth grades 6-12. This is one of the national Ymca signature programs of every youth and teen. Y achievers also engage parents with monthly sessions along with family and community events. This program serves schools in shelby county. Over 80 youth were impacted by this pprogram in 2022.
Social responsibility:in 2022,y on the fly served numerous communities in memphis,west tennessee,and northern mississippi,with programming that provided children and families access to meals,books,educational enrichment and opportunities to engage in physical activities and learn about water safety. In total,there were 109 unique events that reached over 8,400 children across 52 zip codes in 2022. Yon the fly events took place at ymcas,memphis-shelby county schools,desoto county schools,churches,apartment complexes,community centers,public libraries,public parks,community festivals and even some holiday parades.over 11,000 books were distributed at these events,along with nearly 500 backpacks containing school supplies.over 200 volunteers helped at y on the fly events this year.over 5,000 meals and snacks were also served at these events.
