Program areas at Young Men's Christian Association of Rye New York
Youth Development: We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our goal is to help youth cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and academic success. And, because they learn from our role models, we know that they will one day become role models for others. Children ages 18 months - 11 years receive safe, nurturing care at our Early Learning Center and afterschool and pre-school programs. Youth learn new skills and make friends at summer camp. We offered movement and enrichment classes for babies and toddlers and youth sports (competitive and non-competitive) for elementary and middle school age children. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (CON'T) The Y also provides a safe space for teens to socialize with friends, stay physically fit and develop leadership skills. And families enjoy fun activities, sports and recreation together.
Healthy Living: The Rye Y offers many opportunities for members to pursue their health and wellness goals. Our main facility houses a 3,800-sq.ft fitness center, a 6,800 sq.-ft. gymnasium and two pools. Here members can work with a personal trainer, take aquatics classes, swim laps, play basketball, work out, and more. Many of our programs are also open to non-members. Since 2011, we have run LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a 12-week small group program for adult cancer survivors that is free and open to the community. HEALTHY LIVING (CON'T) In 2022, we opened a second facility: the Studios at the Rye YMCA. The new Y Studios is a vibrant, state-of-the-art facility with studios for yoga, Pilates, indoor cycling, High Intensity Interval Training, and more. By the end of the year, we were running 100 group exercise classes per week at the Y Studios. The Y holds senior health fairs, offers evidence-based community health programs and offers a gathering space for area non-profits in the Studios.
Social Responsibility: For 109 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. Our mission takes us outside the walls of the Y, into schools, senior centers, town halls, local businesses and houses of worship. We offer members of all ages the opportunity to make a difference through community service. We bring hope to cancer survivors and help at-risk adults face chronic disease head-on. We teach children drowning prevention skills through our free Safety Around Water class. We do all this and more while keeping a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because they can't pay. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CON'T) In 2022 alone, we awarded over $450,000 in scholarships to 571 families and individuals through our Y Cares Financial Assistance Program. This spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work, from the partnerships that foster strong communities to the small group programs that promote health and well-being.
Aquatics Safety and Instruction: Knowing how to swim and be safe around water is one of the most important life skills a person can learn. We believe that these vital skills can be learned at any stage of life, from infancy (6+ months) to youth to the senior years. The Rye Y's aquatics programs focus on the basic techniques of swimming, training for team competition, and specialized skills such as life guarding and CPR. They foster increased confidence in the water and team building, and give swimmers of all ages a fitness activity that can be enjoyed throughout life. We also offer free pool time for family swim and to other non-profit organizations.
