The Institute Library is described as Connecticut's oldest independent circulating library and one of the last remaining membership libraries in North America. Its mission is to fulfill its historical purpose of "mutual assistance in the attainment of useful knowledge" for its members and the New Haven community at large through literature, civil discourse, and the arts.

Program areas at Young Men's Institute Library

Maintaining Library and providing Library services including miscellaneous program costs to its membership and the community.
The Institute has created the social justice reader, a fellowship opportunity for new haven high school studentsof african american or african descent to explore race asa social construct, racial justice and racism from the disciplinary perspective of their choice.
All income received is used exclusively to maintain the Library and provide Library services to its membership and the community as per the enabling Connecticut statute and the original deed of trust.
