Program areas at Youth Rescue Initiative
The Youth Rescue Initiative (yri) is focusing it's literacy programs for the greater new orleans Youth. To that end, the yri is in the process of establishing illumination centers to act as safe havens where children and young adults learn computer skills. The yri is taking a three pronged approach to establish the illumination centers program. These three avenues target:1. Establishing illumination centers in existing school areas.2. Establishing an illumination center in the new orleans jazz market.3. Building illumination centers as stand-alone structures throughout greater new orleans.
The annual Youth Rescue Initiative "power through reading" program is a community-wide book drive that was created to provide pre-k through 8th grade level books to organizations with pre-existing reading programs who serve our area's at-risk Youth. This month-long drive occurs during june of each year and partners with the new orleans public library system, national book publishers and the general community. To date, the program has collected and donated over 28,000 age appropriate books to local reading programs.
