Program areas at Youthbuild Boston

Building trade exploration program is a 6 to 9 month stipended program that serves 16-24 year old Boston residents who lack a high school diploma and are interested in hands-on vocational experience. Students are engaged each week in math, science, english and language arts instruction, community service activities and field work in building trades like landscaping, painting, carpentry and property maintenance.
The designery is an 8-10 week stipended out-of-school time enrichment program for high school juniors and seniors who are college bound and interested in studying some facet of engineering or design. Students learn technical terms, concepts and basic skills in the field and are then asked to solve a design problem for local businesses or non-profits using that knowledge and culminating in a product that is showcased at the end of the session.
The pre-apprentice program is a 12 week stipended program that serves 18-24 year old Boston residents with a high school diploma or g.e.d. And clean drug screen who want careers in the building trades. Students are trained to received stackable credentials and industry recognized certifications, hands-on construction experience and life skills and job readiness coaching in order to get accepted into various local unions and earn living wages.
Facilities maintenance - the only registered facilities maintenance technician apprenticeship in the state of Massachusetts, our 18 month program for young people aged 18-25 consists of classroom instruction and on-the-job training that leads to a sustainable career as a facilities maintenance technician. Apprentices learn basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical skills, cleaning and preventative maintenance, pest management, landscaping, and occupational health and safety while they are employed full time with an employer sponsor. Participants also earn 8 college credits that can be applied towards a bachelor's degree in facilities management, if they choose to continue their education beyond the program.
