Program areas at Black Teacher Collaborative
Program & innovation team: in 2021, program and innovation successfully completed the design of the pilot concept for the algebra 1 program. Additionally, btc was awarded phase 2 of the gates grant, which supported the design and implementation of the algebra 1 pilot that launched in summer 2022. Btc received a $750,000 planning grant from czi to plan and pilot a number of impactful programming, including the clark-woodson fellowship for emerging Black academics who will conduct research to support the development of a solutions strategy and to pilot and understand the impact of the along tool on Black teacher-black student relationships. P&i launched the blp i3 (interactive, innovative, and immediately applicable) workshops that expose a broader community of k-12 educators to pedagogical learning grounded in the blp elements.
Rap team: in 2021, btc published the first the state of Black education report which articulated the need for a critical quantitative exploration of the Black Teacher and Black student educational experience. The intended audience includes district and state leaders, education advocates, and civil rights organizations. Notably, the report was recently used by the Maryland department of education to support their Teacher training activities. In 2020-2021, btc also partnered with seven schools (2 high schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 elementary schools) across three regions in the southern u.s. (atlanta, ga; baton rouge la, and new orleans, la), serving a total 37 educators and approximately 700 students via the Black Teacher fellowship program.
